Rural School Based Health Center Application for
Telehealth Strategies to Improve Pediatric Health Care
Community Health Center, Inc. (CHCI), a federally qualified health center, has funding to link rural school based providers with pediatric subspecialists in a wide range of disciplines through two telehealth programs: eConsults and Weitzman ECHO Complex Integrated Pediatrics. The goal of the initiative is to increase access to specialty care for children in rural areas by working with providers in school base health settings. Participation in the program will last 2.5 years, beginning January 2018 through August 2020.
One of the telehealth programs offered by this project allows participants to submit electronic consultations (eConsults) to a subspecialist in pediatric dermatology, cardiology, pulmonary, psychiatry, and endocrinology. Electronic consultations (eConsults) are asynchronous, non-face-to-face consultations between a provider and a subspecialist that utilize secure messaging to exchange information. Clinical information sent by the PCP is reviewed and consult recommendations are returned within 2 business days, without requiring the patient to be seen in-person by the specialist.
The program also offers a Complex Integrated Pediatrics (CIP) Weitzman ECHO clinic for providers at rural SBHCs to learn from and present complex cases to a panel of multidisciplinary experts in pediatrician care. The CIP Weitzman ECHO clinic is a nine month program (September to June) that convenes the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 2:00-3:30p EST through live interactive videoconferencing. The CME credits through American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) are available to participants of CIP ECHO.
Interested SBHCs can participate in both the eConsult and Weitzman ECHO programs, or they may choose to participate in just one of the programs. Both programs are free for participants.
The Community Health Center, Inc. welcomes applications from rural School Based Health Centers.
